Going through the history, the company started in June 1998 as “GnuHoo” then its name was changed to “NewHoo” to compete against Yahoo. Then it was acquired by Netscape in November 1998, and it was renamed as the Netscape Open Directory. Following, AOL acquired Netscape and give AOL control of The Open Directory.
