DMOZ – The Open Directory Project that incorporates human editors to organize website is one of the oldest and most trusted web directories and it disclosed recently that it is shutting down. The announcement was made public on its web page and noted that it will close as of 14 March 2017.

Going through the history, the company started in June 1998 as “GnuHoo” then its name was changed to “NewHoo” to compete against Yahoo. Then it was acquired by Netscape in November 1998, and it was renamed as the Netscape Open Directory. Following, AOL acquired Netscape and give AOL control of The Open Directory.
