In Iraq, the people have found a new hero that comes not in his Batmobile but something much better, an old 1990s BMW that is bullet proof. Ako Abdul Rehman is a fighter in the Kurdish Peshmerga and he bought the armored vehicle after an earlier attack by the ISIS militants.
He paid $10,000 for the car so that he and his friends could travel safely. He said: ‘My friends were very happy when I bought the armored car. We started driving in it to the front line near Kirkuk, not worried about ISIS drive-by shootings or roadside bombs.’
He didn’t realize how important his car could be until when he realized that many civilians and security workers were trapped in the city and there were a number of ISIS snipers on rooftops that were shooting anything that moved.
He was able to transport more than 70 wounded people to safety and also managed to collect the bodies of the many that were already dead. During this scenario, his car was sprayed with 50 bullets from the ISIS militants. He said: ‘In my car, I carried Sunni, Shia, Kurds, Turkmen and Christians. I felt like I am truly Iraq and this is who everyone should be.’
This is a picture of his car that has been able to save so many people from near-death situations.
For his bravery, he received a reward from Kirkuk Governor, Dr. Najmladin Karim who personally thanked him and gave him 500,000 Iraqi dinars for his noble actions. He also said that he turned down an offer from the German manufacturer who stated that they are willing to trade his bullet-riddled car for a brand new BMW. He said that the manufacturer just wanted to display the car at its HQ. Instead, he opted to repair the car he has and said they will continue using it.
