The first picture shown below is of the ‘Afghan Girl’ who is a young refugee but has the most piercing green eyes. This photograph was published on the cover of National Geographic in 1985 and became the symbol of the turmoil of the Afghanistan war. Almost two decades later, the woman, Sharbat Gula was reunited with her photographer that initially took her picture.
However, this time she wasn’t just a refugee, she was a convict for the Pakistani government. She was arrested on charges of fraudulently obtaining Pakistani national identity card. The authorities revealed that she had illegally obtained a Pakistani identity card in 1988 and then a computerized one in 2014. She retained her Afghan passport which she used to travel to Saudi Arabia for hajj in 2014.
